ABOUT THE ARTIST
Umberto Mariani (b. 1936, Italy) is a notable multimedia artist who graduated with honors from the Accademia di Brera, studying under Achille Funi. Early in his career, he worked on significant projects such as creating monumental narrative works for St. Peter's Basilica and mosaics and frescoes for various religious sites.
In the 1970s, Mariani gained international recognition with exhibitions at venues like the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels and the Musée Moderne in Paris. This period marked his exploration of themes related to folds and drapery. By the 1990s, he began incorporating lead sheets into his work, developing a distinctive style that transitioned from traditional painting to innovative, experimental forms.
His art is featured in major collections, including the Vatican Museums, Palais des Beaux Arts, and Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Mariani, who lives and works in Milan, is celebrated for his contributions to contemporary art and has been the subject of extensive academic study.
