Umberto Mariani is renowned for his distinctive multimedia art, particularly his complex monochromatic lead draperies. His work explores the illusions of light and shadow within the folds of heavy fabric, often suggesting the presence of hidden forms beneath the surface. This creates a sense of mystery and depth, with the drapery sometimes standing alone in its visual impact and at other times concealing symbolic objects.

Mariani’s style draws inspiration from the delicate folds of Classical Greek statues, which he admired during his upbringing in Italy. This fascination with the interplay between light, shadow, and texture led to his unique manipulation of materials, particularly lead sheets. His early projects included monumental narrative works for significant religious sites, such as St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

Throughout his career, Mariani’s work has been influenced by various art movements, including Spatialism and the Italian avant-garde. He incorporates these elements into his multidimensional compositions, where the drapery becomes the protagonist, creating dynamic visual effects that challenge perceptions of space and form.
